Are you aware of your portable long service leave obligations?

Labour hire businesses are encouraged to ensure they are aware of any obligations they may have under Victoria’s Portable Long Service Leave Scheme.

The scheme was first introduced in 2019 to allow workers in high turnover industries to accumulate long service entitlements. It recognises the worker’s tenure in their respective industry rather than just their time with an individual employer.

Under the Portable Long Service Leave Scheme, people working in community services, contract cleaning and security can transfer their long service leave between jobs and claim it after seven years of working in their respective industry.

Labour hire workers in these sectors often miss out on benefits like long service leave due to the insecure nature of their employment resulting in frequent job changes. Roughly 53,000 contract cleaners and 24,000 security industry workers are covered under the Scheme.

Employers in the contract cleaning and security sectors may be required to register their business and workers for portable long service leave.
