Industry engagement: Commercial cleaning expo / Upcoming sessions for construction and meat/poultry industries

The Labour Hire Authority (LHA) industry engagement program continues, with two upcoming industry-specific information sessions, our final regional sessions for 2023 and our first delegation to a major cleaning industry expo.

LHA participated in the ISSA Cleaning and Hygiene Expo 2023, with an information booth and presentations at the Melbourne Convention Centre on 1 and 2 November.

The exhibition saw over 3,000 attendees and 50 stallholders across two days. The event provided the opportunity to speak to business owners and stakeholders, with over 100 visiting the LHA booth to ask questions and discuss the scheme.

Our team fielded a range of questions around licensing obligations and our actions against unlicensed providers operating in the industry. We were also able to gather useful ideas for future engagement activities and resources for the commercial cleaning industry.

Labour Hire Licensing Commissioner, Steve Dargavel, gave a presentation as part of the event’s education program, speaking about how businesses can ensure compliance with their obligations, and LHA’s work towards a fairer and more transparent labour hire industry.

A number of interested providers and hosts attended the LHA booth after the talk to ask specific follow-up questions and speak directly with the Commissioner.

On the second day of the Expo, the Facility Management Association of Australia (FMA) hosted a Complying with Labour Legislation breakfast and panel discussion. Commissioner Dargavel discussed the risk to businesses of not complying with their licensing obligations, and the impacts on the facilities management industry.

LHA participates in various events and activities to raise awareness, educate hosts and providers, and establish relationships with key stakeholders. If you have an upcoming event or idea to help LHA raise awareness, contact the LHA engagement team at enquiries@labourhireauthority.vic.gov.au

Construction and meat industry sessions

Commissioner Dargavel will be hosting two industry-specific sessions in November – for the construction, and meat and poultry industries.

These tailored sessions provide an opportunity for businesses in these industries to improve their understanding of their obligations and hear about issues particular to each industry.

Key topics of these sessions include:

  • LHA’s role and the labour hire licensing scheme
  • legal obligations of businesses
  • key industry-specific issues
  • recent LHA compliance and enforcement activities
  • resources to support compliance.

The sessions also provide the opportunity to speak with the Commissioner and ask questions.

To register for these events, visit the Events page on the LHA website.

General information sessions

LHA has continued to deliver sessions for providers and hosts across metropolitan Melbourne, with sessions recently held in Frankston, Rosebud and Pakenham. We also held a horticulture-specific industry information session in the Melbourne CBD, following a range of regional sessions.

This week, we concluded our 2023 regional engagement program, holding sessions in Bairnsdale, Sale, Traralgon and Warragul. Feedback from these sessions has been positive, with attendees reporting an increase in their understanding of the scheme.

For the remainder of the year, the engagement team will hold further targeted sessions, as well as undertaking industry outreach in preparation for a further significant program of engagement in 2024.
