Welcome to the October edition of LHA News.

The Supreme Court of Victoria has imposed total penalties of $759,674 on five companies and three directors for unlicensed labour hire operations across multiple layers of contracting.

This prosecution is the Labour Hire Authority’s first in the construction industry, and the highest total penalty in Australia for breaches of labour hire law.

The decision highlights just how important it is for all labour hire providers in a supply chain to hold a valid licence.

LHA’s strengthened legal, compliance and intelligence capabilities enable businesses operating unlawfully to be held to account and reduce potential harm to workers – especially in industries like construction, where the use of labour hire is common.

In another recent operation, LHA officers visited a meat processing facility in Victoria’s south-east to investigate reports of alleged underpayments of workers.

You can read about these stories, as well as a deeper dive into labour hire in the construction industry, in this edition.
